Conquer the highest peak of Bosnia and Herzegovina Maglic Mountain and visit Sutjeska National Park. Even in the summer, this mountain often lives up to its nickname, “Misty Mount”. One can expect fog year-round, even at Prijevor, which is the starting point at 1,668 meters where the ascent begins. It’s a challenging mountain hike to the highest summit of Bosnia and Herzegovina which stretches to 2,386 meters. Scrambling all the way up to Maglić’s ridge, however, is worth the view! There are spectacular views of Volujak, Bioč, Zelengora, Trnovački Durmitor and the heart-shaped Trnovačko Lake.
The trip usually starts in the morning by gathering in front of our agency, from where we go to the starting point Prijevor by an off-road vehicle, which is a one and half-hour drive.
Through this tour, you will get to know the park’s most precious jewel. It has never been fully explored and is the largest natural reserve of its kind in Europe. Perućica Primeval Forest is a real challenge for all botanists as it has been inaccessible for decades. The Beškita and Dragoš Sedlo viewpoints are around 10 kilometers away from Tjentište. A fantastic view of Perućica Primeval Forest and the Valley of Heroes in Tjentište spreads out in front of us among several plateaus connected by a path.
We continue towards Prijevor, where we will also find some of the oldest elements of this region’s material and spiritual culture. Three Katuns are available for accommodation during the summer months. Dinner, overnight.
After a homemade breakfast, we set out to conquer the highest peak of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Maglić.
After arriving at the Prijevor plateau, located at the foot of Maglić, surrounded by the Volujak and Zelengora massifs, we arrived at the starting point of our ascent to the highest peak in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
From the Prijevor, Maglić looks impressive. Maglić Mountain, the magnificent giant, is full of steep and rugged cliffs. Even in summer months, it is interspersed with snow that never melts. The trailhead here from Prijevor is also the shortest route to the Maglić summit, directly up its scenic northwest face. From Prijevor, it’s a challenging mountain hike to the highest summit of Bosnia and Herzegovina. During a clear day it is possible to capture almost all Bosnia and Herzegovina’s mountains fare deep in the continent, so prepare your cameras for beautiful shots. Conquering Bosnia’s highest peak is challenging but enchanting, and at the end of this glorious journey, we can take a much-deserved break for a lunch to contemplate the wonders we saw. Still undiscovered by the masses, Maglić is a perfect hideaway for passionate hikers and mountaineers. Enjoy the view!
We end an exciting and adrenaline-filled day at the most beautiful lake in the Balkans, Trnovačko lake, towards which we slowly descend. One look at the lake’s heart shape will be enough to fall in love at first sight. The feeling will be even stronger when you pay attention to its amazing emerald color.
Returning from the lake to Prijevor, where we will have dinner and sleep.
At around 8:00 a.m. you wake up to the smell of coffee and the rays of the mountain sun.
Through this tour, you will get to know the historical monuments that are an extremely valuable part of Sutjeska National Park. We are returning to the Tjentište, to visit the Memorial Complex of the Battle of the Sutjeska which is seen from the main road. This complex is built in memory of one of the most difficult and bloodiest battles of World War II in which Partisan forces engaged against joint German-Italian and quisling troops in this area.
